Defendant Claims Innocence Alleges Police Cover Up

Karen Read murder trial: Is she a rage-filled cop killer or a convenient patsy?

Defendant claims innocence, alleges police cover-up

Jury now deliberating in high-profile case

A Massachusetts jury is now deliberating in the high-profile murder trial of Karen Read, who is accused of killing her boyfriend, Yarmouth police officer Sean O'Keefe, in July 2022.

Prosecutors allege that Read, a 44-year-old nurse, shot O'Keefe, 46, in the head during a jealous rage. But Read has maintained her innocence, claiming that she was the victim of domestic violence and that she was forced to kill O'Keefe in self-defense.

The trial has been closely watched by the community, and has raised questions about domestic violence and police accountability. The jury is expected to reach a verdict soon.

In her closing argument, prosecutor Katie McMahon told the jury that Read was a "cold-blooded killer" who "executed" O'Keefe. McMahon pointed to evidence that Read had previously threatened to kill O'Keefe, and that she had searched for information on how to kill someone online.

But Read's attorney, Alan Jackson, told the jury that Read was a "battered woman" who was acting in self-defense. Jackson said that O'Keefe had a history of domestic violence, and that he had threatened to kill Read if she ever left him.

The jury began deliberating on Tuesday afternoon. They are expected to reach a verdict soon.

The case has raised questions about domestic violence and police accountability. O'Keefe was a Yarmouth police officer, and some have questioned whether the police department gave Read a fair investigation.

The jury is now deliberating, and their verdict will have a significant impact on the lives of both Read and O'Keefe's family.
